For five decades, literary journalists, psychologists and biographers have tried to unravel what Ernest Hemingway committed suicide, shooting himself at his home in Idaho, while his wife, Mary slept. Now, however, a friend of Hemingway and collaborator in the last 13 years of his life suggested another factor, have been described as a paranoid delusion of the Nobel prizewinner. Is that Hemingway was aware of his long FBI surveillance J. Edgar Hoover, who was suspicious of his ties with Cuba, and this may have helped push the edge.

on the 50th anniversary of the death of Hemingway, AE Hotchner, author of

, said he believed the FBI surveillance "has greatly contributed to his anxiety and suicide" , adding that there was "terribly miscalculated" the fear of his friend of the organization.
