Does science teaching simply need better marketing? | Richard P Grant

Why so many people out of the most exciting thing that you can do with your clothes? A hypothesis!

must be very difficult to grow up surrounded by professional scientists. The questions tend to elicit responses that are much more than what I expected, or worse, ask me a question in return. My niece, who is also charming and intelligent, has a habit of asking questions rather useless like "what are you doing?" or "Why are you doing this?" where the observation of a time to reveal everything. It is likely that your version of the opening gambit of the conversation, so instead of giving a direct answer (which, admittedly, can become tedious), we ask that you come up with your own answer initial attempt. "Form a hypothesis" is a sentence when it is frequent. Then well written, we may ask you to prove your hypothesis, and the conversation can (not always of course) take a route more illuminating than it could have been done differently .

children are naturally curious (why? Form a hypothesis!) And very often, it seems that natural curiosity is overwritten by busy parents / teachers / TV / Web sites, Instead of being encouraged, supported and provided a useful way of thinking. A way of thinking, of course, which happens to be very rewarding and fun. Ignorance may be bliss, but how and why things are the things is at least as entertaining - and has great practical value to boot. How scientific mind lets you know at least where to start to understand things as well as the equipment that you are a productive employability, value and society. It also saves thousands of dollars in homeopathic preparations - you can not drink tap water instead

advertising Enough. If scientific thinking is a useful thing to have in your toolbox own mental, if the appreciation of what science can do (and can not, too) is in fact intrinsically attractive and interesting, so why so bad we do get people interested? I mean really interested, not in a superficial "Oh wow, nice colors" with fireworks and rockets yes, but instinctive and deeply fascinated. 'Hooked', if desired. Why, indeed, he did turn natural acedia insatiable curiosity, if not outright antipathy?

Form a hypothesis.

I was intrigued at the beginning of this school year, the school see my daughter every day at home. This little book contains lesson plans, job logs, all this stuff when I was a boy I used to keep a piece of paper stuck to the back of random laptops or still in our heads. This is a great idea. An even better idea, I said, is that for one of the paper are the first pages of each issue. Say what you will learn and give some information about the course.

Here, for example, is history.

this page, it is very clear that the story is not simply a list of dates and facts (although a schedule mentioned at the end). The reliability of the sources mentioned meaning, different interpretation - all the things I had in my pre-course "O" level and made me fall in history as a hot shot

And here is the art.

Looking a little more structured and formulas, but this: "Connecting texts to their social, cultural and historical", "Understanding the scope and use of spoken language, commenting on meaning and impact and take advantage of this by talking to others. "Surprisingly modern and adapted to life in the Republic of South London Peckham.

geography and languages.

Again, it makes me want to look at the course in much more detail to know exactly what is happening. These are fascinating things
