Cambodia ranks first freedom of the press

among its neighbors in Southeast Asia, according to Reporters Without Borders 2011 Index of press freedom. But journalists in the country several times against censorship, threats, intimidation, suspicious "accidents", says libel to murder, detention and sometimes.

At least 10 journalists were killed in Cambodia since 1993 (the year the government approved a new Constitution), Human Rights Group Licadho.


Licadho A 2009 report lists 30 cases of threats, intimidation and physical attacks against journalists January 2008 to March 2009. According to sources, the victims were targeted by gunmen on motorbikes, spied upon, threatened with death by e-mail, text messaging and phone, was ordered to stop broadcasting or publication, was arrested on charges of defamation or libel, and was beaten often by government officials.

About 40 journalists were killed or missing in the war from 1970 to 1975 in Cambodia, including time photojournalist Sean Flynn (son of Hollywood star Errol), who was killed by the Khmer Rouge .
