Grammy awards 2012 - as it happened

Aa live coverage of the 2012 Grammy as Whitney Houston's death hangs over the ceremony in Los Angeles 54. Live blogging: Brian Braiker and Joshua Alston

19:00:

Brian Braiker

- Hello and welcome to live in the Guardian blog

54th Grammy Awards

I will be your host and

Joshua Alston

and music writer The Guardian Rebecca Nicholson Grammy

They have a number for the first time Nicky Minaj and LL Cool J, teamwork we label through this musical journey. Minaj released her new song of the record of the next Roman Day.

The view this evening, however, is

Adele

. With six nominations, album of the year (21), Album of the Year (Rolling in the Deep), Song of the Year (Rolling in the Deep), Best Pop Vocal Album (21), better performance solo pop (Someone Like You) and Best Short Form Music Video (Rolling in the Deep) - by their appearance at home as much material at the end of the night. It will also have the sympathy of the crowd, it will be his first public performance since her throat was operated on last year. Dave Grohl Foo Fighters were nominated for album of the year, Adele just called "the greatest record ever," as he was interviewed on the red carpet and woe to competition. Tonight will also mark

Katy Perry

aa first public appearance since his divorce s Russell Brand . And all eyes will be on Rihanna and Chris Brown, who will both be in the building - and therefore the performance - for the first time since Brown brutally beat her after the 2009 prices

The Beach Boys

will be on hand, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary

Kanye West

- who has the most nominations with seven nominations - will also be on hand, but is expected to be on their best behavior. Lady Gaga

probably will not make an appearance. And tonight is the night meets the world

Skrillex , dubstep American author to be executed.

But of course, the name that night, lips absolutely everyone is

Whitney Houston

. The R & B superdiva died horribly (if it is not intended), yesterday, for reasons not yet been revealed.

Jennifer Hudson was confirmed as a performer in a tribute to Houston and there were rumors about Chaka Khan to join. Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt will be a tribute to Etta James, and especially the absence makes no mention of a certain kind of honor for Amy Winehouse.

7:11 p.m.:

> Joshua Alston

- Hi Brian, thank you for the introduction

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose

just appeared on the red carpet. It must be very annoying to go to an event and you are almost certain to run into your ex.

Brian

- Yes! Khalifa basically said he would propose to Amber in a year, what was clearly a novelty for her. Does the headline of the night? (Probably not.)

Joshua

- This will probably be the holder of the night in hip-hop gossip blogs. I am very curious to see what your program is, given the war, all neuroses seems to be after the death of Whitney Houston.

19:14:

Brian

Fergie

very similar. And perfectly dressed for the AVN Awards. (Not that Google.)

Joshua - Well, I know nothing about fashion, but according to my boyfriend, bright orange dress is Gaultier Fergie "incredible."

Brian
- I'm not angry against Fergie dress at all. Impressive is a good word. "Classy", maybe not. But as I said, I will not argue with him.

Katy Perry , however, with ice blue hair and matching dress looks as if he were auditioning to be the deputy of the storm in the upcoming movie X-Men. Meanwhile, E! TV has done a good idea of ??what explainer Whiz Khalifa is for people at home.

7:19 p.m.:

Brian , join us for the red carpet action, what we see on E! indeed. Not literally, of course.

Unlike any other fashion commentators, we do not know anything about fashion. Therefore, it is important to note that the positive and say that Britain Jessie J looked lovely at Julien Macdonald. In the spirit of positivity, this analyst has nothing to say about this soon divorced, Katy Perry, who would probably rather at home with a pint of ice cream and one piece anyway.

7:27 p.m.:

Joshua

- Gotta love the irony of the criticism live fashion. Kelly Osbourne is giving their assessments of restrictions, pending its lavender flamboyant hair color makes it sound like if she played bass in a Jem and the Holograms cover banda.

19:28:

Janine

- all by hand
Nicky Minaj

been wrapped in red along with what I'm sure must be the true pope today.

Brian - nobody expects the Inquisition NICKI MINAJ

7:37 p.m.:

Brian

- A little primer on the Grammys during you wait for the show to start: the albums and songs published between 1 September 2010 and September 30, 2011 are eligible for consideration. So thank you God, Drake did not make the cut. His record will feel quite old, whereas if finally gets the green light next year. (But does not explain why Bon Iver is nominated for Best New Artist -. The guy was on the hot list 2008 Rolling Stone) The winners are chosen by members of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. Record companies and labels to submit tracks and albums for consideration by the voting members of the academy 12,000.

Joshua

- There was some controversy this year, however, during the consolidation of several categories that some people thought and minorities disproportionately affected . Jesse Jackson threatened to protest against the ceremony, but apparently have not been confirmed. After the death of Whitney Houston, would have seemed a bit small though.

19:45:

Brian - A blonde Rihanna, which is impressive in a black low-cut dress, just call your team - who claimed to have designed with Georgio Armani -

"simple and sexy and a little gangsta while."

Joshua

: I am here dying on the dress Rihanna. Despite my ignorance of fashion, red carpet OMG moment when I see it.

Janine

- Insight of E 's Giuliana Rancic: Nicki Minaj costume "is a little too costume-y, and not really out of fashion . "This is Grammy love.

7:55 p.m.:

Brian - E! reported that her ex-husband of Whitney Houston Bobby Brown flew and should arrive in Los Angeles in 21 hours. Meanwhile, the family released this statement to MTV today:

I am deeply saddened by the death of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. At that time, ask to privacy, especially for my daughter, Bobbi Kristina. I appreciate all the condolences that were sent to me and my family in this most difficult time.

8:04 p.m.:

And we will.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Kick

the ceremony with his new single Our Own attend his first public performance since the great man, Springsteen, saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who died last year. The group is supported by a full orchestra and it sounds very '70s-era Springsteen. Macca is at the forefront with his new girlfriend, both young and as they have fun. Springsteen is looking very strong and energetic for a man of 97 years.

8:09 p.m.: Brian: LL Cool J begins with an eloquence:

How about this time, so far? No distance around this problem: we had a death in the family. Thus, at least for me - for me - it just feels good to start with a prayer for a woman who loved us, for our fallen sister Whitney Houston. Hevaenly Father, thank you for sharing with us our sister Whitney.

Joshua

: LL Cool J opening sad about the amount of the reform of this show has done for the night, with a more serious and revenential - , at least for the opening. If the producers hired a comedian to run the show would have been a very difficult night.

Brian

- LL Cool J is all class and charm and optimism and warmth. It is the anti-Gervais.

8:16 p.m.:

Brian

Joe Levy

, editor of Rolling Stone contributing, tweets clip file Whitney.

honors Whitney Whitney. Very good. This is a way of saying that no one else to match.

- Joe Levy (@ RealJoeLevy) February 13, 2012

8:20 p.m.: Performance: Bruno Mars

Brian
Bruno Mars has a very nice impression of Janelle Monae get an idea of ??James Brown.

Joshua - I think Bruno Mars is to completely remove the imitation of James Brown. Even Whitney Houston turned a top note, the first of many, certainly in the discharge of taxes.

Brian - and welcome

Rebecca Nicholson

, Guardian music writer, we will binds to evaluate performance. And Rebecca is not so impressed with Bruno:

Bruno after Bruce - if you receive this procedure in alphabetical order, Taylor Swift will be tired by the time it's your turn. This is the same on Mars, with a tight, synchronized performance retro, but it's not quite reach the dizzying heights of Janelle Monae hook-up at the Grammys last year.

8:24 p.m.:

Brian - Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys on stage seems Does to present an award. Alicia said: "We love Whitney Houston." But ... they sing a song by Etta James. The launch of two in a Sunday so beautiful duet of love. And, my God, where did you Raitt's voice anyway? You all know that this is a southern girl, right? As in southern California. It's pretty nice. You know how to go about this? With a performance by Chris Brown.

8:25 p.m.:

PRICE: Grammy for Best Solo Performance pop-someone like you Adele

Joshua

- seems strangely nervous considering how many appointments she has and how many people are pulling. It should be very concerned about performance.

20:35:

Performance - Chris Brown

Brian

-. LL Cool J says

Chris Brown

"Moves like no other" Unless you're Mike Tyson. I love this song. We really bonded. Chris Brown will play all their best known hits tonight. Except one.

Joshua

- Are you sure you pull bluntly, Brian. I must say, Chris Brown is incredibly talented. This is a great night for him if you can call the U.S. which is an amazing artist. Maybe your story can be found listed in "Everybody makes mistakes."

Janine

- No, Joshua, judging by twitter, no.

REALIZE THAT

uncomfortable, SOMEONE is encouraging a crowd beating a woman famous fuckchrisbrown #

- Samhita Mukhopadhyay (@ desifeminista) February 13, 2012

Brian: I'll punch when Brown pulled. I recognize that it is talent, but I suspect it will not do much for his image. And I find it very hard to feel sorry for him.

8:37 p.m.:

PRICE! Jay-Z and Kanye West win the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by Otis.

Joshua

- Jay and Kanye are not there to collect his prize. Maybe you are in Paris to F'd?

Rebecca

- There is no denying that Jay-Z and Kanye Otis was the performance highlight of the slate a mediocre rap, but shame Nicki Minaj did not win, if it is only because it would be nice to see the pope spit a few bars.

Brian

- Yo Kanye, I'm very happy for you, I got enough, but the best is Otis Redding sample of all time - of all time - in Gone, the year 2005 Late Registration. Otis is thin compared to the serious:

Joshua - Jason Aldean gave microphone in his duet with Kelly Clarkson. In the first decision of the night, congratulations Jason

8:58 p.m.:

Performance - Foo Fighters

9:07 p.m.: Performance - Rihanna and Coldplay

Joshua

: This version of Coldplay attended "We Found Love" is used to Rihanna. The images are a little retro but. And I'm sure I mean in a negative feedback.
: Sorry, I slept. I go back and live blogging as soon as the voice of Chris Martin keeps changing. These are difficult times in the life of a young man and I salute their courage to perform in public.

Janine

Women, policy and the prime minister: what you suggested

When we asked readers what new prime minister's advisor on women's issues are a priority, we were overwhelmed by the response. Here are some answers

Read

Guardian roundtable here

Last week, The Guardian opened his round table next to the drives, creating a blog to do what you would if you had access and influence of Laura Trott, the new head of David Cameron in the policy. What government policies should be examined from a female point of view and areas of action should be modified to better respond to women's issues? (And that should be abandoned altogether?)

The response was fantastic, which is a revised list of strengths. The complete blog can be found here.

What are the policy areas should be discussed?

Policies
not act in isolation - that departments and sectors. For example, child poverty is too inextricably linked to women's poverty - so that the effects of cutting child benefit not only the children themselves, but women who care for them - which affects their jobs, child care, etc. adviser to review the legislation should take into account the implications of cross what is proposed.

Sinai explodes into violence after years of chronic poverty and alienation

Bedouin

Egypt

stations accused of looting, bombing pipelines and kidnapping foreign nationals in the empty post-Mubarak security

Ahmed Abdo still asleep in his hut in front of the Hotel Aqua-Sol beach on the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea, where 20 masked men armed with guns stormed

Abdo, 30, and his two companions were bound, their mobile phones taken. The members of the Bedouin tribe from intruders, Tarabeen, demanded money - 4 million Egyptian pounds (£ 420,000) - the owner as compensation for the land on which they built the complex. He belonged, they said, Tarabeen.

When the owner objected: "They took everything - air conditioners, generators, televisions, gas cylinders, including doors," said Abdo. He showed the Guardian around the station and abandoned looted: kicking in doors or not, taking mattresses bed frames, broken windows, cushions and carpets seized. The office had been stripped of equipment and furniture, the room occupancy letters and pamphlets have were scattered on the ground. Ten refrigerators and freezers has disappeared. The air conditioning units were ripped from the walls. They even tried to take the table, but fell in mid-flight, leaving uneven bowlegged. The value of goods taken is estimated at over £ 100,000.

"Of course I was scared," said Abdo. "We told them that only workers here, we must feed our children." Fortunately, there was no guests at the Aqua Sol at the time of the raid three weeks ago, a combined result of the season and the impact of the crisis in tourism in Egypt.

police said Abdo, had not intervened. A highway patrol last resort because it was looted, but "mind its own business." A local police chief has already informed the owner of Aqua Sol "to solve the problem with the Bedouins, it is not a good time for us to move towards a confrontation with them," said Abdo.

The raid on the Aqua-Sol, allegedly by a small group of men who live outside the immediate area Tarabeen, is one of a series of incidents in the Sinai in recent months . In the south of the peninsula, including the abduction of tourists and armed robberies in the north, which is worse - the repeated bombardment of a gas line, smuggling, arms and drugs, and increased the militant Islam

what unites them is a reaffirmation of the Bedouins of the region after decades of marginalization, neglect and discrimination and a vacuum of more security after the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak .

Israel, whose border with Sinai for about 240 kilometers (150 miles), has seen the number of attacks during the past year with the alarm. "It is taking steps to prevent the total collapse of security in and around the peninsula [and] avoid the appearance of some small Bedouin forces of a State out of control," wrote analyst Ehud Yaari, a report, Sinai: a new front to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy last month. He described the peninsula as a "new access point ... with an expansion of the terrorist infrastructure" and a wild frontier.

Over the past 13 months, a pipeline that transports gas through northern Sinai to Israel and Jordan was attacked by militants on 12 occasions, most recently last week, interrupting the flow and causing millions of dollars in damage.

gangs are trafficking large numbers of people fleeing persecution, war or poverty of the rest of Africa, charging thousands of dollars for passage across the Sinai to Israel. Camps were established, from which flow terrible stories of rape, torture, extortion, misery and despair.

smuggled across the border has become an industry: weapons and goods to Gaza marijuana and refugees in Israel. According to Yaari, the annual value of this shadow economy is estimated this year more than $ 300 (£ 190 million) last.

Israeli intelligence officials say

Hamas and other Islamic groups working with activists among the Bedouins to launch operations against Israel. They are "becoming a new experience in Sinai from which launched a terrorist activity," said Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, head of Israeli military intelligence earlier this month.

Many observers say the anarchy and lawlessness has skyrocketed, particularly in the northern Sinai, Mubarak's government fell a year ago. But the region has long been detached from the rest of Egypt and largely beyond the iron hand of security forces.

suffered from chronic underinvestment in education, health and transport. Its inhabitants are among the poorest in Egypt. Added to the powerful combination of poverty, alienation and tribal loyalties Palestinians is a large population in the north of the peninsula, with family connections, political and economic Gaza.

investments in the south, massive since the 1990s in the luxury resorts in the Bedouin village of fishermen in Sharm el-Sheikh, and a program to create a "Red Sea Riviera" along the coast , has ceded to the Bedouin.

John Timoney: the notorious police chief sent to reform forces in Bahrain

The man who has earned a reputation to suppress protests police chief of Miami and Philadelphia, now brings his talents to Bahrain controversial - for better or for worse

A controversial police chief in the U.S. was hired by the government of Bahrain to train and reform the security forces of the nation.

John Timoney has spent nearly three decades with the New York City Police Department before serving as chief of police in Philadelphia and Miami. He was hired - with former Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in Britain, John Yates - to reform the security forces in Bahrain. The two were brought after publishing a report detailing the torture and death of prisoners arrested by Bahraini authorities.

Supporters

Timoney seen as a tough cop, intelligent, with a record of failing to police and control based on mass demonstrations. Indeed, they say, it is the ideal candidate to improve the security forces of Bahrain, which have been linked to the suppression of murder, torture and flagrant dissident protesters.

chief critics, however, that the processing of events and meetings in each city who Timoney served are made with examples of police violence, the illegal tactics of infiltration, alarmism, and a blatant disregard for freedom of expression.

new appointment in Bahrain Timoney first broke in December. In an interview with NPR, Timoney asked if the people of Bahrain have the right to protest.

"On a daily basis, it is absolutely right to protest, demonstrate," said Timoney. "This is where the problem comes into play is a small town. He reminds me more in Manhattan than in the rest of Manhattan, where you have these narrow streets."

warned against the dangers of unauthorized marches affecting traffic.

"When I saw you take care of Wall Street, when people begin to participate in marches unauthorized starting to paralyze the movement of vehicles and emergency," said Timoney. "It is a reason why you should go to the police. Not that they say yes or no about their right to speak but can not be managed by a spectacular and dramatic impact on the rest of society? "

One day later, the Interior Ministry in Bahrain reflected in the narrative of the movement Timoney Twitter: "Groups that marched Road to Budaiya SH Khalifa bin Salman Highway Police blocked traffic that is the situation. ".

NPR Timoney went on to say that the protests had previously attended in Bahrain, the police had protesters "reasonable notice" and to maintain a distance between themselves and the crowd.

as recently as Tuesday the first anniversary of the uprising in Bahrain, protesters clashed with police in the streets of the nation. According to the BBC, "a massive presence of police and army" was in force in the capital of Manama, which leads to a scene of tranquility. On the outskirts of the capital, however, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at demonstrators who responded by throwing firebombs and stones at the authorities. A doctor who spoke to the BBC indicates that the priority of security in their country had become "more serious" since last year.

The use of tear gas has been particularly controversial in the repression of protest in Bahrain. According to Amnesty International, Bahrain human rights groups reported at least 13 deaths from the use of tear gas since protests began last year. At least three of these deaths occurred after Timoney was contracted, and include Salma Mohsin Abbas, 81, and Yasin Al Asfoor, 14, who died after boats left at home. Saeed Sayyed Hashem, 15, meanwhile, died Dec. 31 after being beaten with a short-range box.

Although it is unclear whether Timoney told the Bahraini authorities to use tear gas, their confidence in the tactic - and other non-lethal - was in full screen during the end of his career in law enforcement in the United States.

First significant interest

Timoney in a major confrontation between the police and the public came in 1988 when he was assistant police commissioner in New York and led the response to the revolt call Tompkins Square Park. The incident led to 121 complaints of police misconduct and helped launch Timoney reputation as an agent that could handle large crowds. That same year was increased as police commissioner of Philadelphia.

As commissioner in Philadelphia, Timoney chaired by the arrest of more than 380 protesters at the Republican National Convention in 2000. At that time, Philadelphia has denounced the ACLU chapter Timoney department to work with the state police to infiltrate and spy on protest groups, in violation of a decree of the mayor. Before the demonstrations began Timoney officers conducted raids on warehouses and spaces where activists puppet construction and banners for events. That same year, Esquire magazine named chief U.S. Timoney "best policy" and praised his attitude rough and tumble dryer and commitment to protect the public.

sellers John was in Philadelphia at the time. Such was his militants in the days before the convention, vendors said it was in Philadelphia as an "observer" and that "in no way involved in the actual protests."

This did not prevent the police to arrest him on 13 charges of mischief, including "possession of an instrument of crime." In this case, the "instrument" was his cell phone. His bail was set at an unprecedented $ 1 m. At least two protesters had bail set at $ 500,000.

"The Philadelphia police were very aggressive. They operated in secret and covered, posing as demonstrators and posing as ordinary people who were upset with the Republican agenda" , told The Guardian Sellers.

"I think Philadelphia was the beginning of a change in the policy in the U.S. and I think Timoney was responsible for that. And what we learned in Philadelphia Miami and expanded on this, "said Hermes Guardian.

"It was not until Miami was not really a whole range of weapons to use against demonstrators," said Hermes.

Eurozone crisis live: Barroso salutes Greece's courage as markets fall

. President of the European Commission called bailout to agree

2:59 p.m.:

If you are interested in the machinations of debt negotiations (and I know many of you), you Reuters should see this play:

Aa experts

default: Greek gods sovereign debt

It explains what happens when countries default, and indicates that the process is actually quite blurred. As a teacher Emilios Avgouleas

University of Edinburgh said:

(This is) the chaotic structure (a) process that is life or death to whole nations.

The history of modern debt renegotiation dates back to 1907 and the second Hague Convention, which prohibits countries from conducting the war on each other loans outstanding ( Limit use of debt collection contractual force

Before that, they pull their armed forces, as an insolvency of Mexico learned in 1861. The default value, then was invaded by France.

2:13 p.m.:

President of Greece The European Commission today proposed an olive branch, praising the "courage "who have shown in recent months.

Jose Manuel Durao Barroso your concilliatory Parliament today. Rather than castigate Athens, has urged European leaders to accept commitments to Greece, and give the second rescue.

Barroso told MEPs that:

I salute the courage of the Greek government and the Greek people in these very demanding.

And I hope that Member States, members of the European Union accepts the commitments made by Greece.

There was no suggestion by Mr Barroso, that Europe would be better without Greece, or postpone the bailout.

comments after the Netherlands

Jan Kees de Jager

became the first finance minister to officially break cover and called to the rescue delayed. In an interview with Dutch daily

Financieele Dagblad

, De Jager pointed out that Europe should wait until Greece has held a general election, then you know exactly to whom you do business:

should wait after the election. They may negotiate commitments with the new government.

1:39 p.m.: encouraging economic news from the United States - the latest unemployment data shows that the number of new people to sign in the unemployment benefit fell to its lowest level in nearly four years.

initial claims for unemployment insurance (a closely guarded piece of economic data) fell by 13,000 last week to 348,000. This is the third consecutive week, and encourage optimism that the U.S. economic recovery is gaining momentum.

Stark shift with Portugal, whose unemployment rate is 14% today. While the U.S. has been following a recovery plan that provides for a GDP growth of 0.6% last quarter, Lisbon has been reduced.

1:17 p.m.:

A foreign minister of the United Kingdom has requested a solution to the Greek crisis will not end "completely destroy" the country.

Lord Howell of Guildford

comments came as the House of Lords began a debate on the euro area debt crisis.

Mr. Howell told the upper house of the British Parliament that the crisis was having a "chilling effect" on the global economy. Opening the discussion, said:

Clearly the immediate interest of Britain to see resolved problems of our neighbors, especially the nodes in the euro area.

"tangled" might be a kind of British understatement .... He continued:

They have a negative effect not only in the euro area, but in our own economy and the global economy, including even major new markets in emerging countries where there is increasing use of more .

quote through the Press Association.

Mr. Howell also requested a bonfire of bureaucracy in the European Union on competitiveness Bost. This is a question that David Cameron, explores the last EU summit.

24:35:

The euro continued to lose ground today,

in the final minutes.

European stock markets have not recovered from previous losses, with 46 |

However, the volumes of shares were surprisingly low. This plot:

... shows the number of shares changing hands on the S & P 500, which dates back to 2000. According to Louise Cooper, of BGC Partners, the recent fall in volumes is a sign that markets could soon take a fall unpleasant.

It shows customers today:

The graph shows the volume of trade on the FTSE 100 shares is very similar to the above, with a huge drop in volumes in 2012 and less than a quarter of trading volume from the time pre -crisis. Both the DAX and the CAC have also seen light years of negotiations to date suggests evidence of little things by demonstration.

the stock market volatility

United States and Europe has fallen a long way since the terrible moments of last fall, but has recently increased, suggesting the concern to come back.

So what's the conclusion? I think there is a real possibility now that Greece has a default hard and complicated, and that financial markets could suffer serious if an earthquake occurs.

11:55:

disturbances are wreaking havoc on Sunday in Athens

Helen Smith reports :

turns out that almost every single traffic light in downtown Athens, was destroyed in an orgy of violence that erupted during the parliamentary vote on the spectacular loan agreement .

About 200 traffic policemen took place in the city to put order on the roads. But four days later, chaos still reigns traffic. Apparently, the liquidity problems of the Ministry of Transport did not have the funds to replace the lights.

Here is a photo of passengers standing around traffic lights vandalized Tuesday in Athens.

11:35: buffetted Portugal remains on both sides today - its economy is weakening the austerity moves, and Economists fear it will be dragged deeper into crisis by Greece.

first economy: The unemployment rate rose to 14% of the Portuguese in the last three months of 2011 compared to 12.4% in the previous three months. This is the highest rate since the 1980s.

Portugal is less than one year in a restructuring plan for three years, according to Troika IMFG / EU / ECB, which includes tax increases for most workers and cut wages and bonus for civil servants. In return, Portugal gets a ? 78bn rescue plan.

This has helped reduce economic growth - the data this week showed that GDP fell 1.3% over the last three months of 2011

This brings us to the Greek connection. Martin Koehring, an economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, said today:

Although the risk of contagion to the rest of Greece in the euro area has actually declined over the past year (eg, through the intervention of the ECB policy deleveraging of banks themselves, progress in Italy and Ireland) do not remain the main risks. Allow values ??of Greece could still cause great losses among European banks and may increase investors' fears that Portugal could be next, raising the need for additional bailouts of Portugal, and possibly other countries too heavily indebted. Allow Greece to exit the euro may have more dramatic consequences

It should be remembered that Portugal was to hit the targets set by the troika. However, its bonds are trading at distressed levels because it is hard to believe he could return to international markets soon.

11:16: The prospect of a greater presence in Athens of the troika - to ensure the implementation of reforms - is also driving protests in Greece today

public anger against the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank is already high.

Helen Smith
officials said that the troika could not leave their hotel - the Hilton - through the front door for the last month due to mass of leftists recalcitrant, and outside the protest day.

If the number of representatives of the Troika are in Athens, tensions could rise even further:

"My biggest fear is that Greece is becoming a communist state," said Karatzaferis right-wing newspapers, referring to the rise and rise of the left in the back of the opposition whipped all policies of the EU / IMF. "I'm worried about what will happen after the elections in April."

11:05:.

In Greece today, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos attempts to rally support for the bailout of controversial political leaders

Venizelos insists that this support is "absolutely vital" if EU leaders must be convinced that Greece is really able to implement cost reduction set out all draconian.

is a big question, says Helen Smith

, our correspondent in Athens. With the exception of George Papandreou, PASOK and the Socialist leader Antonis Samaras, the conservative New Democracy party leader - the main supporters of the ruling coalition - the opposition to this latest round of austerity is at record levels

Helena reports:

bracing themselves, Venizelos first met Dora Bakoyiannis, the former foreign minister who heads a small centrist party Democratic Alliance, and is also an advocate of measures.

"message of Greece should be clear. Corrective changes will happen. Greece is determined to remain in the euro area," said Bakoyiannis. "We expect Europe to show respect for the Greek people and at the same time ensuring that the sacrifices will not lose."

But his subsequent meeting with Georgios Karatzaferis, leader of the populist Laos and the secondary part of the government is unlikely to be so easy. Karatzaferis lambasted the loan agreement, this morning, as "essentially irrelevant".

Sinai explodes into violence after years of poverty and alienation

stations accused of looting, bombing pipelines and kidnapping foreign nationals in the empty post-Mubarak security

A closer look at extending life

Nanotechnology is revolutionizing many aspects of our lives, not the least care. But the technology could actually prolong life - and is it safe? David Adam

comes a time with all new technologies, however, interesting and cutting edge that is believed to be the big question asked by members of the audience: "So, what can be done to I "And this is the same for nanotechnology -? the science of very, very small

The promise is there, if some of the first applications: glass "clean" itself, for example, small and additives that improve the performance of everything from bumper cars to lotion tanning. But what about the really important issues of the day? You can help nanotechnology on human health? As the population ages gradually increase tension and puts a heavy health service (the number of Europeans over 65 years is projected to increase by nearly 40% in 2030), nanotechnology can help you live longer and more productive? This was the central question of an expert panel and audience members were invited was asked last month organized a special seminar sponsored by the Guardian and nanochannels, a project funded by the EU, which is run a broad awareness education project of nanotechnology. Aldershot 0-3 Manchester United

Manchester United must wait the more severe test of his rehabilitation, but as the tremors have been since the 6-1 victory for their neighbors in the city on Sunday, which could have a greater pleasure than usual dismissal of less beef League League Cup.

Aldershot 15th place in League Two and the priority is to preserve the state of the football league. Club Hampshire have a monthly salary of £ 90,000, which is barely enough to keep Wayne Rooney, Monday through Thursday, and the gap between the teams was evident.

never likely to be slipping and disappeared once preposterous idea that Dimitar Berbatov had put United in front boastful. Sir Alex Ferguson promised his club would "recover" and although it was too difficult to read on their progress in the quarterfinals, was able to praise the "professionalism" and "discipline" that underpinned victory.

Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia has other goals that the United should have been more in what was one sided contest. There was a point of screaming fans that move from a score of 6-1, which is coated with irony, but they could have few complaints and Ferguson.

"We were under pressure with the result this weekend," said Owen. "As you can imagine, the laughter and jokes at the club [] have calmed down a bit [Sunday] . Sometimes you need a kick in the teeth to get there and was a great kick in the teeth. We wanted to get, and luckily we got the victory. "

Ferguson had revised his team in this small field and atmosphere, which found that on three sides. No losers derby appears and the line was not very different from that which began at Leeds United in the previous round of this competition. However, there was still a lot of class in the program at least in the form of Berbatov, who could not have imagined making a rare start in front of 7,000 fans against a first division club, when he completed his 30.75 m transfer books of Tottenham Hotspur.

team pressed from the start and the conversation was inappropriate Nemanja Vidic challenge of Alex Rodman, as the attacker launched clear. Back Captain America was not the last man and fled with a reservation.

Aldershot
swayed by the desire, but Jermaine McGlashan States has kept them at arm's length and completed by the first half with a goal from Owen. He began the move - a sweeping pass to Berbatov - and ended, after Bulgaria had rolled up on the ball and engaging for him. Visitors could also have scored through Fabio da Silva on 21 minutes.

"and guarantee the quality was tied, they were beaten by an outstanding group of players ... world class players," said Holdsworth. "But I'm proud of everyone at the club . Sir Alex was full of praise for us and we will take comfort from this. "
It became a question of how much recording in the U.S. and there was a flattening of the second half, a training camp feel to the proceedings. Ferguson has three alternatives for youth, including rookie Michael Keane on the right side, and the United Kingdom ended the relationship with the minimum of fuss.

Wales 2-1 Montenegro

Wales away, not a moment too soon for his manager, Gary Speed. Six games into his reign of Wales has produced a performance which should restore optimism disillusioned fans and serve as a warning to Fabio Capello, whose team will host Wales at Wembley next Tuesday and no hope of retract the speed that made for England by beating Montenegro, the only other realistic chance to lead the group G.

Wales came into this game without a home win and compete in three years out of the race for a place at Euro 2012, the bottom of the group with zero points. The national sentiment had sunk so far that only 8194 people gathered at Cardiff City Stadium, the lowest ever for a game of international competition in the capital. These fans were rewarded with a claim display speed has been requested. His tactical deployments worked, his team looked solid and liquid, and the most important players in Wales, Gareth Bale in particular, became his best screens for long. Confidence was running for the team.

"During the first six months, we tried to put things in place and develop a style that goes, because I think it's our best chance to succeed," said Speed, who had already lost four of their five matches in charge. "Sometimes we have to sacrifice performance, but was a process that we had to come through and against Montenegro, we have instilled in the players has paid off. Our passage was excellent. "

Wales made a shaky start to the game and the visitors looked more polished in early trade, but the Welsh defense of the surveillance was limited to long range shooting. Wales found their rhythm when Aaron Ramsey has been reduced from a pioneering role in the midfield position a little more to orchestrate the game The Arsenal player was the pivot of the movement that lead to fluid the opener on 31 minutes. This movement ended with the surrender of David Vaughan, a center that goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic, lost the ball, leaving Steve Morison, who was selected ahead of Robert Earnshaw, to spend his fourth goal in nine games.

Two minutes later, Bale gave an idea of ??why he chose to implement the speed down the right instead of left cutting inside and unleashing a terrible 25 meters. Bozovic turned with difficulty.

Montenegro had conceded a goal in four rounds before that, but injuries forced him to a series of defensive changes for the trip to Cardiff and Bale and Craig Bellamy, in particular, he gave an evasive.

the future, however, had the quality and Montenegro Stevan Jovetic, Fiorentina skilled attacker returned to action after a year due to injury, showed that, with a superb goal in the 71st minute. After receiving the ball on the edge of the cutting area in Jovetic Chris Gunter and fired a fierce shot past Wayne Hennessey. Nerves may have started ringing in Wales, but showed remarkable calm to see the victory, even if Hennessey was forced to make some good saves at the end.

"One of the things we wanted to do was our best players in the game by getting the ball forward and we worked very well," said the speed performance of Bale, Bellamy and Ramsey.

Muslim Tory minister says Pakistan's treatment of women fails Islam

Lady Warsi said that women are denied the rights granted 1,400 years ago in the Quran

Pakistan fails to live up to one of the principles of Islam, which guarantees rights to all women, according Sayeeda Warsi, the Conservative Party co-chairman and minister without portfolio, which is the first Muslim to sit as a full member of the cabinet.

In a sign of impatience from Britain to Pakistan, Lady Warsi said the first Islamic republic denies the rights granted 1,400 years ago in the Qur'an.

As he prepares to become the first British Minister to address the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) next week, Warsi, said in an interview in The Guardian that in a shell "nut" that Pakistan is up to the ideals of its founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Warsi said she is able to deliver a strong message to Pakistan because it is unused by "colonial past". She said she had raised the issue of women's rights in Rawalpindi last July, in a speech in Urdu Fatima Jinnah University, the name of the younger sister of founder of Pakistan. "Why is it that today are denied the rights that their faith you gave 1400 years ago?" Warsi said, recalling his central message of his female audience.

Warsi, 40, whose father came to Britain from Pakistan in 1960, will speak at a meeting of foreign ministers of OIC next week in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

activists have warned against the treatment of women in northwest Pakistan, where justice is administered in parts by the tribes through the Loya rather than by the state. Women generally suffer more severe treatment when couples are condemned to be stoned to death for adultery. Samar Minallah, women's rights activists, warned last year. "In many previous cases, the woman died later, or marriage for a bride price simply can not allow it to be, must take revenge. "

Since the appointment of cabinet Warsi visited Muslim countries, including Kuwait and Pakistan four times. She played an important role in relations with Pakistan after smooth David Cameron caused a great scandal in July, saying in India that the elements of the state of Pakistan, are guilty of exporting terrorism.

Warsi, who recalls wearing a pink shalwar kameez the day was named, believes his presence in the cabinet of challenges, "the kind of lazy prejudice" is said in the Muslim world and in Great Britain that someone of his background can not be a government minister.

"I do not think that in this clash of civilizations, where the West and the Muslim world," he said. "I mean, if so, where do I fit?"
