A study on the economic impact of learning English in developing countries have argued that language can increase the buying power of about 25% of people and economies in development need access to English if are increasingly and position in the global economy.

The British Council, Education UK and the organization of cultural relations, which commissioned the report by Euromonitor, an organization of leading research, said it is the first statistical research on the benefits of English in developing countries.

The report, published last month, collects data from five countries: three with linguistic ties to Britain through colonialism, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and two with a strong French colonial heritage, Cameroon and Rwanda.

Data were obtained from existing research and through interviews with businesses and employers in each country.

While skill levels vary between English Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan, the researchers found a relationship between competition, even some moderate and high levels of investment from countries like the U.S. and the UK. In all three countries, the investment account for the English-speaking countries between 33% and 41% of total FDI.

"On the contrary, largely French-speaking Cameroon and Rwanda lost, with only 2% and 1% of total FDI from English speaking countries," said the report.

Zubeida Mustafa
journalist, whose book on his native Pakistan, the tyranny of language in education, was published last month, says the benefits of English in Pakistan limited to a small minority and led to inefficient education policy.

"in English can not solve our problems. Not enough teachers who know and can teach English in English. Children can not understand what they have learned," said Mustafa .
"artificially created demand for English has distorted the education strategy. In fact, this is a strategy and schools use a method of success and failure of mixed English , Urdu and local. "
