Universities Week, highlighting the impact of college on individuals in the UK, communities, culture and business. Following the revision Browne, one might think that the stakes are high this year. It would be worth making the campaign with special care
Go to the site, and you're greeted with a "generator FactShare." Click "Create" and you have made one or two sentences on the region's universities work. There is a reference to an institution, sometimes, a department, but usually nothing. No story, no explanation, no details. They are pretty trivial, I will not bore you with examples. When you hit on one that looks interesting, there is no link to learn more, just an invitation to click on the following "fact".
What bothers me. It demeans the work of universities do, and patron of the public. Universities are not magical machines made, and should not be promoted as such.
However, this week also sees the round'm 2011, a scientist, Get Me Out of Here. This may sound horrible, but it is really promising. And if you are the type of person you like, click on the Internet for intelligence - I guess the generator FactShare wants to attract -. It can be incredibly addictiveI'm a fan of "If atoms are mostly nothing, why things sound?" But it's hard to compete with "what if you put the pieces in a particle accelerator?" (And the answer: "I do not know, but in 1996 someone left a little beer in the LEP at CERN ...").
It's amazing the amount of humor, the answer to scientists as well as links to more information and humility in most cases. "Do not know" is a common response, but not in a pejorative manner.
