Mexico casino arson attack shows violence is spreading

President Felipe Calderon asked Mexicans to unite around policy against drug cartels after an attack in Monterrey

Until recently, Monterrey was seen by the rest of Mexico as an oasis of peace and prosperity in the midst of the violence of drug war in the country. But the attack this week in a casino, in which at least 52 people died, said that no place is safe.

The victims, mostly women, armed men were killed after setting fire to Casino Royale, which was filled with players and staff Thursday. Rescuers continued their search for the remains of the two-story building for bodies Friday.

Governor Rodrigo Medina, told a news conference that police are investigating whether the attack in Casino Royale was revenge for not paying protection money. He declined to elaborate on other possible lines of investigation or identify a criminal group was suspected of being behind the fire.
