Republic of Ireland 0-0 Slovakia

Giovanni Trapattoni has made Ireland hard to beat and his reign has been splashed very good draws against opponents respected. It was not one of them. Ireland desperately needs to make a statement and show that they could make an extra effort more if necessary.

For a night of frustration, however, below, with known bugs ruin the show offensive. I felt almost like an incidental detail that the team has set a national record with their sixth clean sheet of time.

had to make their presence felt in front of goal, but did not create more than a handful of occasions and they were lost, with the captain, Robbie Keane, the biggest culprit with his sponge-blank header on 74 minutes. Richard Dunne, in injury time, also could have done better with a header at the far post.

was not the frantic final mandatory, they hid some of the cracks, which replace Simon Cox ripped a good opening, but the die was cast. Value of Slovakia for the point of having presentable opportunities and the general impression was that Ireland, the error strewn and lacking the incision, had rejected the possibility that they had to take if you are in the Group B. Home support are not fooled and they welcomed the whistle full-time with boos.

groping of inspiration for many of these 90 minutes, with Aiden McGeady does not fit and Kevin Doyle has worked to some extent. His first half came when Damien Duff played a strong two with Keith Andrews and fired a shot just to block Jan Mucha.

In many ways, it was a typical performance of Ireland under Trapattoni, solid, but limited, with little in the last third. The increased sense of urgency early in the second half, however, until the final phase Slovakia had looked more likely scorers. They were the best team in the first half with more possession and there were significant opportunities for hunting Vladimir Weiss and Filip Holosko. Ireland pushed to their heels, while the captain, Marek Hamsik, radiating menace.

Weiss dragged a low shot just ahead of the post after the break and Hamsik was denied, after a quick cons Holosko for a wonderful St Ledger block. But the heroic Irish should be at the other end and it was alarming to see creative talents are peripheral.
While people are worried, however, the many individual errors neglected, golden opportunity came suddenly. Duff has chosen a fine cross from the right and Keane, bought a yard of space, rose at the far post for a single head. Almost in slow motion, who headed the ball over the crossbar, the ball from his shoulder, as far as his head.
