A charity which aims to highlight the case of academics who could be the subject of human rights abuses is "deeply concerned" by Prof. Pham Hoang Minh in Vietnam. Pham is professor of mathematics at a university in Ho Chi Minh City. He was accused of "attempting to overthrow the socialist government" and will be held August 10. He was remanded in custody since August 13, 2010. His supporters believe that Pham was arrested because he criticized the government's decision Vietnamese to leave the controversial bauxite mining in the uplands managed by the Chinese central Vietnam. Vietnamese Environmentalists believe there is a danger that toxic waste treatment plant will enter the water supply.

Scholars at Risk calls on educators to write to the Vietnamese Prime Minister and ask him to examine the circumstances of the arrest of Pham.
