A trickle of visitors to the house of Chen Guangcheng has become a stream, even if the attacks against the thugs who keep
Many people wish a happy 40th anniversary of Chen Guangcheng Saturday, and some plans to travel hundreds of miles from his village in Shandong province to do so. None of his wellwishers really expect to see him.
For over a year to the blind, self-taught lawyer and his family were under house arrest in Dongshigu, Linyi, without means of communication. The authorities have not charged with a crime and not even acknowledge their detention. However, dozens of people who tried to visit were threatened, beaten and stoned by thugs who guarded him.
Curiously, rather than discourage visitors, such experiences seem to have stimulated. The initial thread has become a stream
Nicholas Bequelin, Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the support of Chen, partly reflecting its position as a "poster boy" for the rights movement.
"[But] what motivates activists is that it's an indefensible case ... The extent of the persecution of it's unusual, "said Bequelin.
While authorities say the dissidents, including Nobel Prize for Liu Xiaobo, were detained for violating the law, they simply denied that Chen is not subject to any restrictions.
"As citizens increasingly travel to the visit of Chen met with beatings and other violence, the central government simply can not repeat the same request that Chen is a man ever free, or claim he is powerless to prevent the government from the city of Linyi, "said Renee Xia, international director of Chinese human rights (CDDH).
Even the running time of the State-Global recently proposed Linyi authorities should provide more information about your case - the first time a Chinese newspaper had mentioned it since before was imprisoned
"I was in a small prison and now I'm in a prison more," Chen said in a video that friends managed to pass with the outside world. Check that the thugs were asked broke into his house and beat the couple, leaving Chen unconscious, according to a letter smuggled out to his wife a month later.
